Starbucks has six cup sizes — not three, not four — and the naming system is intentionally confusing. A "Tall" is the smallest standard size. A "Venti" means twenty but holds 24 ounces when iced. There's a secret size not on the menu board. And two of the sizes get the same number of espresso shots, which means one of them is a worse deal.

This guide explains every size, what you actually get in each one, and which size gives you the best value for your money.

Each Size, Explained

Demi Espresso Only
"Half" — from French "demitasse" (half-cup)
The 3-ounce cup used exclusively for espresso shots. A single espresso, doppio (double), or triple comes in a Demi. You'll never order a latte or Frappuccino in this size — it's for straight espresso only. Most people don't know this size exists because it's never on the menu board or in the app under "sizes."
Short Hidden Size
8 ounces — the original "small" before Starbucks renamed everything
The secret size. Short isn't displayed on menu boards, but you can order it at any location — just say "Short." It's 8 ounces (half a Grande) and costs about $0.30 less than a Tall. Here's the hidden value: a Short espresso drink gets 1 shot — same as a Tall, which is 12 ounces. That means the Short has a higher espresso-to-milk ratio, making it stronger-tasting and more concentrated. If you want a strong, small coffee and don't need 12+ ounces of liquid, the Short is the best-kept secret at Starbucks.
Tall
"Tall" = 12 ounces — confusingly, this is Starbucks' "small"
The smallest standard size on the menu board. Originally Starbucks only had Short and Tall (small and large). When they added bigger sizes, Tall became the new "small" even though the name suggests otherwise. A Tall espresso drink gets 1 shot (75mg caffeine) — same as the Short but diluted with more milk. For brewed coffee, a Tall has ~235mg of caffeine. At ~$4.75 for a latte, the Tall is the cheapest standard espresso drink.
Grande
"Large" in Italian — but Starbucks' "medium" at 16 ounces
The most popular Starbucks size and the one most menu pricing is built around. A Grande espresso drink gets 2 shots (150mg caffeine) — double the Tall. Grande brewed coffee has ~310mg. At ~$5.25 for a latte, the Grande is generally the best value for espresso drinks because you get 2 shots — the same number as a hot Venti for ~$0.50–$0.70 less. Most calorie and caffeine data you see online is based on Grande.
Venti
"Twenty" in Italian — but only 20 oz hot; iced is 24 oz
This is where Starbucks sizing gets genuinely confusing. A hot Venti is 20 ounces and gets 2 espresso shots — the same as a Grande. You're paying ~$0.50–$0.70 more for 4 extra ounces of milk, not more espresso. A Venti iced is 24 ounces and gets 3 shots — the extra 4 ounces and extra shot account for ice displacement. The iced Venti is the better deal. If you order a hot Venti latte, you're drinking a more diluted version of the Grande for more money.
Trenta
"Thirty" in Italian — 30 ounces, cold drinks only
The largest Starbucks size at 30 ounces — bigger than most human stomachs (the average stomach holds about 32 oz). Only available for iced coffee, cold brew, Refreshers, and iced teas. No espresso drinks, no Frappuccinos, no hot drinks. A Trenta Refresher has ~85–90mg caffeine. A Trenta Cold Brew has about ~310mg — approaching the 400mg daily FDA limit in a single cup. Best used for low-caffeine drinks (Refreshers, iced teas) where you want volume.

The Espresso Shot Anomaly

This is the single most important thing to know about Starbucks sizes — and most people don't know it:

SizeStandard ShotsFlat White ShotsShaken Espresso Shots
Short12 (ristretto)
Tall12 (ristretto)2
Grande23 (ristretto)3
Venti Hot23 (ristretto)
Venti Iced33 (ristretto)4

The critical insight: a hot Venti and a Grande get the same 2 espresso shots. The Venti just has 4 more ounces of milk. You're paying more for a weaker-tasting, more diluted latte. If caffeine is your goal, the Grande is the better value. If you want the most concentrated espresso flavor, the Short is the best choice.

The exception: Flat Whites always get an extra shot at every size (they use ristretto shots — shorter, more concentrated pulls). And Shaken Espressos have higher shot counts than standard lattes at every size because they're espresso-forward drinks with less milk.

The barista hack: You can always add extra espresso shots for about $1 each. If you want a Venti-sized drink with stronger coffee flavor, order a "Grande with an extra shot" instead of a Venti — you'll get the same 16 ounces with 3 shots (instead of 2 in a Grande or 2 in a hot Venti), and it costs about the same as a Venti.

Which Size Is the Best Value?

Best Value for Espresso Drinks: Grande
2 shots for ~$5.25 vs. a hot Venti's 2 shots for ~$5.75. Same caffeine, ~$0.50 less. The Grande gives you the best espresso-per-dollar ratio for lattes, cappuccinos, and macchiatos.
Best Value for Brewed Coffee & Cold Brew: Venti
The price jump from Grande to Venti (~$0.50) is small relative to the 50% volume increase (16oz → 24oz iced). For brewed coffee and cold brew, there are no espresso shot concerns — the caffeine scales proportionally with volume.
Best Value for Caffeine-Per-Dollar: Short Brewed Coffee
A Short Pike Place has ~180mg caffeine for ~$2.65. That's 68mg per dollar — the highest caffeine efficiency on the menu. If you just need a caffeine hit and don't need a large drink, this is the cheapest way to get it at Starbucks.
Worst Value: Hot Venti Latte
Same 2 shots as a Grande but $0.50–$0.70 more. You're paying extra for diluted milk. If you want 20 ounces, order a Grande with an extra shot instead — more caffeine, similar price, better taste.

Syrup Pumps by Size

The number of default syrup pumps also scales with size — and it affects sweetness, calories, and sugar more than most people realize:

SizeDefault PumpsAdded CaloriesAdded Sugar
Short2 pumps~40 cal~10g
Tall3 pumps~60 cal~15g
Grande4 pumps~80 cal~20g
Venti5–6 pumps~100–120 cal~25–30g

Each pump adds about 20 calories and 5g of sugar. Going from a Grande (4 pumps) to just 2 pumps saves you 40 calories and 10g of sugar with minimal taste difference — most baristas agree 2 pumps in a Grande is the sweet spot. What About Dunkin' and Dutch Bros Sizes?

Size TierStarbucksDunkin'Dutch Bros
SmallTall (12 oz)Small (10 oz)Small (16 oz)
MediumGrande (16 oz)Medium (14 oz)Medium (24 oz)
LargeVenti (20–24 oz)Large (20 oz)Large (32 oz)
Extra LargeTrenta (30 oz)XL (24 oz)

Dutch Bros sizes are the largest at every tier — their Small (16 oz) equals a Starbucks Grande. Dunkin' sizes are the smallest. When comparing prices across chains, always compare by ounces, not size names. A "Small" at Dutch Bros is the same volume as a "Grande" at Starbucks and a "Large" at Dunkin'. Quick Tips

Always order a Short for kids. An 8-ounce hot chocolate or steamer is the perfect child's portion — and it costs $0.30 less than a Tall. See our non-coffee guide for kid-friendly options.

Order iced Venti for espresso drinks. You get 3 shots instead of the hot Venti's 2 — making the iced version a better caffeine value. The extra 4 ounces accommodate ice.

Use Trenta for Refreshers only. A Trenta Refresher (~85mg caffeine, ~130 cal) is a manageable amount of caffeine and sugar. A Trenta Cold Brew (~310mg) is approaching your entire daily caffeine limit in one cup.

Ask for "light ice" on iced drinks. Starbucks fills iced cups with 40–50% ice by default. Asking for "light ice" gives you 15–20% more liquid — effectively getting closer to a Venti's liquid volume in a Grande cup. See our budget hacks for more money-saving tricks.
